Bareilly: Two sub-inspectors, including a police outpost in-charge, were suspended after they allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 to remove names of the accused from a molestation case and deleted video evidence that could have cleared them, police said on Sunday.
Moradabad SSP Satpal Antil suspended Surjan Nagar outpost in-charge Amit Kumar and trainee sub-inspector Mayank Pratap Singh after an internal inquiry confirmed they had demanded a bribe and tampered with digital evidence on Saturday. Departmental inquiries have also been initiated against them.
The issue began with a complaint filed by a farmer from a village in the Thakurdwara area on Feb 17. He alleged that three men — Yogesh Singh, his brother Gaurav Singh, and Saurav, all from Lalapur Pipalsana village — had assaulted him and harassed women in his family on Feb 15. The investigation of the case was handed to Kumar and Singh.
However, the accused's father, Hari Singh, submitted an application alleging that both officers had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 to remove his sons' names — Gaurav and Saurav — from the complaint. He also accused them of deleting a video that showed his sons were not involved in the alleged harassment.
Hari Singh said, "A video was shot at the time of the incident and it didn't show that my sons were engaged in any criminal activity. We had given the same video to the investigating officers, but they asked for a bribe and deleted the video from their record."
After receiving this complaint, Antil directed SP (traffic) Subhash Chandra Gangwar to probe the matter. Once the allegations were verified, both officers were suspended, and a departmental inquiry was ordered. Antil said, "There is zero tolerance for bribery in our department. We have assured impartial investigation in the case."
